Full-time job

Full-time job

Poetry by
Kevin Bowersox

So much accounting
Who owes me what and interest accrued.
That look. I saw that my friend. Tallied and stored.
That laugh, that tilt of the head now accumulated and compounding

So many stacks of receipts for what I have given
Each day expanding like black mold moist with self-doubt
Until a greater return can wash them clean.

Payment in kind.
Only payment in kind is not an offense.
Only payment in kind will absolve your debt.

You owe me. You owe. I will not forget.
And tracking it all is a full-time job.
