Mike Johnson Attends the Crucifixion

Mike Johnson Attends the Crucifixion

Poetry by
Kevin Bowersox

I've seen the future! It's Christian and white.
But there won't be a Christendom 'til there's a Christ.
Let's get this ball rolling!
Christ why so slow?

So many lashes, two score less one.
My arm is aching, I've blistered my thumb.
Payday is coming but
Christ why so slow?

Put your back in it. Hoist that rude wood.
Nails that I hammered will surely hold good.
Oh, hurry, man, hurry!
Christ, why so slow?

He means so much to me: privilege and clout.
Still this poor Nazarene's hanging about?
Daylight is burning!
Christ, why so slow?

Rolling for garments? Nix that, I'll buy them.
Oh what cachet I'll pull with these items!
Clothe me in virtue!
Christ, why so slow?

You sorrowful women are bringing us down.
Make room for someone of wealth and renown.
Get up here, Barabbas!
Christ, why so slow?

Crack his stems, Jesse! The sun's fading fast.
What's that? It's finished? Good news at last!
I knew it would happen but
Christ, why so slow?

Pierce the side, Clyde---a stream of pink water!
The taste of Ambrosia---a glory piñata!
I'm drinking my fill as I'm holding you back
And keeping my foot on the neck of some hack
Face-down in the mud at the foot of the cross.
That's where I like you, pal: under the boss.
Victory's sweet, your defeat even sweeter---
Like something to eat from out of the eater---
A ladder to heaven I'll build from your bones.
Justice is coming but
Christ, why so slow?
